When I first got sober and started reading the Bible I read it through my trauma. I heard “honor your mother + father” I thought it meant obey. To obey my parents would have literally meant dying. I would not have made it to 21. My family was very wounded and they only had brokenness to give. I realized what this young man just seemed to know. Honoring our parents or our family does not mean obeying them. It means bringing honor to them. Follow God, heal and grow, find the people that can love you well. I’m doing so we bring honor. I’m doing so we give them an invitation to do the same.
